Patient Stories
(available for interviews):
Frank Cima spent four and a half months in the hospital including 45 days in a coma from a strange form of pneumonia. The ordeal left him without any muscle tone and he was unable to walk. After spending time in the acute rehab unit, he can walk again and he continues with outpatient rehabilitation.
Taylor Carey found himself in the acute rehab unit after shoulder surgery. Carey fought polio as a baby and has been on crutches and a wheelchair throughout his life, resulting in rotator cuff injuries to both shoulders. He spent time in acute rehab after two consecutive shoulder surgeries. Now he's mobile again in his wheelchair after rehab.

Background:

Mercy General Hospital's Acute Rehabilitation Unit is a 25-bed facility for people with disabling injuries or illnesses. Patients treated include those who have experienced a stroke, spinal cord injury or head injury. The acute rehabilitation unit is the first in the Sacramento area to be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for its research-supported, interdisciplinary program. This year, CARF certified Mercy General Hospital's Stroke Specialty Program for its comprehensive rehabilitation services specifically designed for patients recovering from stroke. Over the past 25 years, more than 8,000 patients have been treated in the unit. Mercy General's Acute Rehabilitation Unit has an 84 percent return-to-home rate, compared to the national standard of 77 percent.
