Mercy invests more than $20 million to open an advanced Cancer Center
with latest in comprehensive outpatient services
The 33,500-square-foot building is scheduled to open in late 2011

SACRAMENTO, CA, August 27, 2010 - Mercy today announced plans for a new Mercy Cancer Center and Mercy Imaging Center, which will provide the latest technology and all cancer-related outpatient services in a single convenient location while also continuing Mercy's tradition of high quality inpatient care.

Moving forward, Mercy's outpatient and inpatient oncology services throughout the community will be known collectively as the Mercy Cancer Institute of Greater Sacramento.

One of the newest additions to the Mercy Cancer Institute will be a 33,500-square-foot outpatient diagnostic and treatment center in Sacramento. The center, located at 3301 C Street, will have two distinct programs. A 22,000-square-foot Mercy Cancer Center will provide comprehensive cancer treatment services, including infusion therapy and radiation therapy. Right next door, the Mercy Imaging Center will offer a complete range of imaging services, including MRI, PET/CT and women's imaging. Mercy is investing more than $20 million to develop this center, which will be the first in a network of similar centers Mercy intends to establish throughout the community. The facility is expected to open for patient care in late 2011 once tenant improvements are completed in the existing office location.

Together, the Mercy Cancer Center and Mercy Imaging Center will be the first facility in the Sacramento area to provide comprehensive, coordinated, patient-centered care in a convenient patient-friendly setting.

The Mercy Cancer Center will provide a calm, non-stressful environment for patients and caregivers. "There will be quiet areas and a healing garden," said Lynn Smiley, Mercy's sr. director of oncology services in the Sacramento region. "We will offer support for patients by providing services such as nutrition, patient education and support groups. There will be a range of complimentary services such as counseling and massage therapy."

The Mercy Cancer Institute's goal is to provide a seamless continuum of care that will enhance the experience of Mercy patients and complement the high quality cancer care already provided by excellent physicians and other dedicated caregivers at Mercy's Sacramento area hospitals (Methodist Hospital of Sacramento, Mercy General Hospital, Mercy San Juan Hospital and Mercy Hospital of Folsom). The new facility will have dedicated nurses who serve as patient navigators, making sure patients and their families have a personalized plan-of-action for their care.

The Mercy Cancer Institute's outpatient services at the new location will include medical oncology, chemotherapy, infusion, radiation therapy, support and complementary services such as nutrition and massage. A high-tech feature of the center is its $4 million Varian Trilogy linear accelerator, with stereotactic radiosurgery and image guided radiation therapy capabilities.

The new Mercy Imaging Center will be the central location of Mercy's five outpatient imaging sites throughout the Sacramento region. "This is exciting news for Mercy Imaging Centers," said Sigrid Owyang, executive director of Mercy Imaging Centers. "The new Mercy Imaging Center in Sacramento is part of Mercy's long-term strategy to provide imaging services and expanded access beyond our hospital walls."
