The Mercy Neurological Institute's epilepsy specialists evaluate patients through a multidisciplinary approach that includes patient history, routine EEGs and neuroimaging.
Epilepsy affects patients in varied degrees of severity, so Mercy's specialists develop individualized treatment plans based on in-depth discussions with primary care providers, patients and family members. Toward an ongoing goal of zero seizures and zero side effects, Mercy offers epilepsy patients:
- Monitoring - through ambulatory or inpatient video EEGs, full-service detailed testing serves to clarify diagnoses, classify seizure types, localize seizure onset and help the epilepsy team evaluate patients for appropriate treatment, including alternative therapies or medications.
- Treatment options - varying by patient, these may include medication, neurosurgery or vagal nerve stimulator placement.
- Clinical trials - to optimize outcomes, patients have the option of participating in clinical trials on emerging treatments when available.
