Mercy Gives $1.1 Million in Grants to Help Thousands of People in Need
35 local non-profit organizations receive grants to help fund programs
in Sacramento, Nevada, Placer and Yolo counties
SACRAMENTO, January 6, 2011 - Catholic Healthcare West (CHW), which operates the local Mercy hospitals, and Mercy Foundation have awarded $1,183,907 in grant funding to 35 nonprofit organizations in Nevada, Sacramento, Placer and Yolo counties.
The CHW grants, from $5,000 to $50,000, will impact health issues ranging from mental illness to chronic disease management, and community-based programs that provide services from birth to end-of-life. This year's recipient organizations reach out to local ethnic communities and provide services to multiple generations from infants to the elderly.
"Our annual Community Grants Program is one of the important ways we are able to help deliver critical healthcare and social services to those in need," says Mercy's Sacramento Service Area President Tim Moran. "We are proud to work collaboratively with so many outstanding organizations to improve the health and well-being of the communities we serve."
This year CHW and Mercy hospitals in the greater Sacramento region distributed $642,907 to support 24 local nonprofits in the community. The grants are funded by contributions from Mercy hospitals, including Mercy General Hospital, Mercy San Juan Medical Center, Methodist Hospital, Mercy Hospital of Folsom, Woodland Healthcare and Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital.
Mercy Foundation, through its Mercy Ministries Grant Program, this year awarded $541,000 to 11 local nonprofit organizations whose work focuses on care for the poor and elderly, education, healthcare and housing. Grants ranged from $20,000 to $75,000. Criteria for awards included alignment with the Foundation's mission, vision and values; collaboration with Sisters of Mercy ministries; and grant focus, particularly the target population served.
The Mercy Ministries Grant Program is made possible by Mercy Foundation's many donors. "Philanthropic support is a powerful expression of compassion for people in the community who need a hand. The CHW Community Grants Program supports community-based organizations that provide services to individuals, families and children in need. The grants program is open to all nonprofit service organizations with an interest in building healthier communities by improving health and living conditions. The program supports organizations attempting to address the underlying causes of illness - such as physical and substance abuse, neglect, poverty and homelessness - as well as specific health issues.
Catholic Healthcare West has awarded community grants every year since 1990. Since then, CHW has distributed $5.3 million to 240 organizations in the Sacramento area and $34.8 million to deserving projects throughout the CHW system. This year's Community Grants were awarded to the following Sacramento-area organizations:

Capitol Community Health Network - A member network of nonprofit community clinics and other health services organizations that provide a continuum of cost effective, culturally appropriate, high quality, primary health care services to all people regardless of ability to pay.

Child Advocates of Nevada County - The Foothills Healthy Babies program ensures that disenfranchised, underinsured, and MediCal families that struggle to utilize preventive services have a medical home. Provides transportation to routine medical visits as well as to specialists in Sacramento.

Citizens Who Care for the Elderly (Yolo County) - Strives to improve the quality of life for the elderly and other caregivers.

Clara's House - Addresses the health needs of the poor.

Communicare Health Centers (Yolo County) - Provide high quality healthcare with emphasis on health education and preventative care in Yolo County.

Community Recovery Resources - Nevada County's primary drug and alcohol treatment recovery agency provides residential, outpatient, mental health and aftercare services for children, adolescents, adults and families.

The Effort - Provides an integrated continuum of medical services, addiction treatment and mental health services to individuals, families and communities.

El Dorado Community Health Center - Provides high quality, comprehensive, prevention-oriented health and social services to the medically underserved population of El Dorado County.

El Hogar Community Service, Inc. - An outpatient mental health agency that serves adults in the Sacramento community who are experiencing severe and persistent mental illness.

Harm Reduction Services - Dedicated to working to reduce the spread of infectious diseases, increase health promotion and access to care and treatment and advocate strategies to reduce the harm caused by drug use in the community.

MMC for Children and Families - Provides healthcare to low-income and underserved individuals residing in the greater Sacramento area.

Northern California Children's Therapy Center (Yolo County) - Provides comprehensive programs aimed to help children with disabilities achieve their greatest level of independence and provide quality therapeutic intervention in all areas of development.

Powerhouse Ministries - Brings hope and healing to the homeless in crisis and those living in low-income communities in the Folsom and Orangevale area.

Roseville Home Start, Inc. - Assists homeless families to transition into affordable, sustainable permanent housing and self-sufficiency.

Sacramento District Dental Foundation - The charitable arm of the Sacramento District Dental Society and the dental community that promotes the oral and general health of the public.

Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Center (Yolo County) - To eliminate sexual assault and domestic violence through sensitive prevention and treatment.

Sierra Family Medical Clinic (Nevada County) - Provides fully integrated primary and behavioral healthcare, dental services and specialty care in a rural, medically underserved region in Nevada County.

Sierra Forever Families - Transforms the lives of children in foster care by building and nurturing permanent families.

Society for the Blind - Provides training, tools and mentorship to individuals who are blind or have low vision to live productively and independently.

Volunteers in Victim Assistance - Provides immediate and long-term support for victims of violent crime and their families as they transition from victim to survivor.

Waking the Village - Provides a free transitional living program for Sacramento's homeless young parents and their children at Tubman House.

Weave, Inc. - Provides comprehensive crisis intervention and prevention services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Yolo Community Care Continuum - Provides adults requiring mental health crisis services with community-based treatment alternatives.

Yolo Family Service Agency - Provides low-income counseling services to Yolo County's uninsured children and families.

Alternative Pregnancy Center - Meets the needs of women with unplanned pregnancies and empowers them to build a positive future for themselves and their child(ren).

Community Health Referral Network - A Catholic Healthcare West pilot program that connects hospitals to nonprofit community-based clinics and Mercy Clinics to find the right care in the right community setting for patients who lack a healthcare home and rely on emergency departments for primary care.

Cristo Rey High School Sacramento - Provides a catholic, college preparatory education to students with limited financial means. Students participate in a unique work study program, learning professional skills and generating income to offset the cost of education.

The Gathering Inn - Provides physical, mental and spiritual restoration for homeless women, men and children in South Placer County.

Mercy Beyond Borders - Works to link displaced women and children living overseas with U.S. resources to promote health, provide education and alleviate poverty.
